Jack Vokes

Jack Vokes who organised the School Reunion in 2007 gained national fame in December 2020 when he became the first person in the South West to receive a Covid-19 vaccine. He is 98 and was a patient in Southmead Hospital.

Peter Sumner

Peter Victor Farrington Sumner passed away at Southmead Hospital on 6th February 2019.  Peter was a PE teacher at Thornbury Grammar School from 1960.  He completed his working life still teaching P.E  but for many years Peter was also a teacher of Maths.

He might be best remembered as the originator of the folk dancing group the Folk Companions which began as a combination of groups from Patchway High school and Thornbury Grammar School and became widely renowned.  When Marlwood School opened in 1972, Peter was one of the original six Heads of House – Buckingham.

Rita Hitchcock (nee Bintcliffe)

The death of Rita Hinchcliffe was reported by the Thornbury Gazette on 25th February 2021. Rita arrived in the Thornbury in 1962 after being appointed as an English teacher at Thornbury Grammar School. In 1970 she became senior mistress and assisted in the transition to Marlwood in 1972 when she became one of two deputy heads. We understand that she was a founder member of Thornbury Choral Society in 1963 and was treasurer at its outset. Retirement brought Rita great happiness when in October 1994 she married John Hitchcock in Olveston Church
